The South Shetland Islands are a group of islands located 120 kilometers off the shore of Antarctic in the southern ocean. These islands include 11 larger islands and several smaller ones.

Many countries (such as America, Argentina, Great Britain, Chile, Brazil, Russia….) have established their own science research base on these islands.
King George Island, the largest island among The South Shetland Islands, is located at 62 23’South, 58 67’ West.

In the beginning of 1998, Spain established a permanent science research base, named Juan Carlos I, in Livingstone Island of the South Shetland Islands.
A few months later, in the Antarctic summer of 1998 and 1999, a Spanish expedition team was investigating at sea in the nearby King George Island water area.

The expedition team collected sediments from different glaciers and isolated 5 types of aerobic bacteria from the samples they collected.
